Ahiska-Turkish Ethnic Minority and Refugee People in Dayton  are Facing Growing Intimidation and Abuse.

DAYTON, Ohio (NNA) — Ahiska-Turkish Ethnic Mnorities are Muslim immigrant Ali Shakhmandarov on Sunday. Ball was initially charged with vandalism and burglary but was released because there was not enough evidence to hold him.

Racial slurs and vandalism to a Ahiska Turkish family's home and vehicles landed two people in jail, and police said new evidence may lead to the arrest of two more suspects.

The original incident occurred at a home in the 1400 block of Ray Street in Dayton shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday. The victim told officers he woke up to the sound of glass breaking and people outside yelling slurs regarding Ahiska (Meskhetian)Turkish and Russian refugee people. The suspects were seen by witnesses using a bat, potted plants and rocks to bust out windows in the house, as well as on a 2003 Maserati and a Mercedes parked outside, said Sgt. Moises Perez.

Ali Shakhmandarov said he was concerned for his family's well-being when he saw at least four people outside destroying his property.

"I worried not just for my property but for (my) life," he said. "Basically, they were just yelling, 'we don't want you here. Go back to your country.'"

Dylan Ball, 22, was arrested on charges of vandalism and burglary after officers questioning neighbors noticed his hands were bloodied and they located a trail of blood near the victim's home and cars. However, he was released from the Montgomery County Jail Monday after the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office indicated there was not enough evidence to hold him.

About 100 Ahiska Turkish people live in the Old North Dayton neighborhood on Dayton's east side where the incident took place. Police and Dayton City Commissioner Matt Joseph met with the Ahiska Turkish community Monday night to discuss concerns. They collected several cell phone videos, one of which includes suspects making racial slurs to the victim, and interviewed other witnesses. As a result, Perez said they made two additional arrests in the case Monday.

Ryan Mills, 21, was arrested on ethnic intimidation, aggravated menacing and vandalism charges while 22-year-old Lindsey Snell was arrested for vandalism. Perez said they plan to refile charges against Ball, and said another woman also believed to have been involved in the incident could be charged.

The suspects told police "the Russians" hit one of their cars and fled the scene prior to the vandalism taking place. Perez said the suspects were intoxicated and that story may have prompted the attack, but it's not believed the victim damaged anyone's vehicle. Officers noted they could find no vehicle damage on the vandalized cars that were consistent with a crash.

It's believed the family was targeted because "they're different" than others in the neighborhood, Perez said. He said the suspects come from a "problem house" officers are monitoring due to other criminal concerns. Actions such as what occurred Sunday night won't be tolerated, he said.

"We don't care who you are, how old you are, what color, race or anything. It doesn't matter. We just know if you're a victim we're going to investigate it to the fullest extent we can and prosecute that person," he said.
